Botox®

Introduction

If you see crows’ feet, forehead lines and frown lines in the mirror – you aren’t alone. These wrinkles, referred to as dynamic wrinkles, are the result of continued and ongoing movement of your facial muscles. Over time, these wrinkles become deeper and leave permanent lines on your face. Neuroxins, such as Botox and Dysport, stop the movement of these muscles which in turn reduces stubborn lines. Botulinum toxin type A – the active ingredient in these products, is remarkably safe and backed by decades of clinical research.

How Botox® Works

A small syringe will be used to inject the appropriate amount of neurotoxin to the specific areas of your facial anatomy. Your treatment should be comfortable and take as little as 15 minutes.

Over the coming days, typically one week to 10 days, you will notice your results reveal themselves – lines becoming smoother, and an overall refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

It only takes a few minutes to inject Botox® and its effects can last anywhere from 3-4 months. Most people repeat the treatment every 4 months to maintain their wrinkle-free appearance. The results of Botox® are best with regular and continued treatments over time.

Be sure to schedule your next visit within 3 months for optimal and continuous results!

What Results Should I Expect?

Botox® can give you a more youthful appearance by smoothing out the dynamic wrinkles. Static wrinkles that are due to aging and sun damaged skin will not be affected as they are not caused by facial expressions. Botox® does not tighten skin or replace the need for laser resurfacing or a facelift. It is often used in conjunction with other procedures though, such as laser wrinkle reduction, laser resurfacing or collagen injections, for a combined effect.

Botox® injections are done with a fine needle and require no anesthetic and no recovery time. By carefully choosing the muscles to treat, only the wrinkle-producing muscle is weakened which preserves your natural facial expression. Treatment takes about 15 minutes. Most patients can return to work immediately. Patients should avoid strenuous physical activity for the first 24 hours after the injection.

Results are not immediate. It usually takes three to five days to notice a reduction in muscle activity and up to 2 weeks for a full effect.

Is Botox® safe?

Botox® treatments have been used over the years to safely and effectively treat many muscular diseases as well as wrinkles. Only those muscles injected have temporary weakness.

There have been no reports of permanent damage caused by the injection of Botox® . Local bruise at the site of injection or slight drop of the eyelid are usually temporary side effects in some cases. In general, the use of Botox® has proved to be safe.

Thousands of patients receive Botox® every year and it has become a popular treatment for reversing the signs of aging.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox®

What areas can be treated with Botox®?

Botox® can be used to treat a variety of facial features, including: eyes, forehead creases, eyebrow lines and lifts, and the corners of your mouth.

Does Botox have any side effects?

The most common side effect is temporary bruising at one or more of the injection sites. This can be covered with make-up. On occasion, the Botox® can migrate (leak) into nearby muscles, causing temporary weakness. There are rare cases of drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. The chance of experiencing a side effect depends which muscles are injected. Any side effect is temporary, as the effects of Botox® are completely reversible.
